Squirrel Hill Sports Bar

This is a run-of-the-mill sports bar in Squirrel Hill. The waitresses are young and cute and wear skimpy referee shirts. The beer is cheap and the game is on. That is not what this post is going to be about.

This post is going to address something that, having been to around 200 bars now, we have noticed. We think it is critical to bring this to the public’s attention: it is not always Jameson.

Now, maybe you don’t drink whiskey. That is probably a good life choice, but if you do like whiskey, chances are you like Jameson. We here at TGPPC love all whiskeys and bourbons, but if we have to choose a shot at a bar, it is usually Jameson. Jameson has a unique sweet flavor that makes it very distinct from other whiskeys and it is pretty cheap. After you have drunk enough Jameson, which we have, you can tell when it isn’t the real thing.
Not Jameson

We do not mean to single out this bar. It is just one of many offenders. When the owner poured us free shots (in an effort to get us to be return customers), we looked at each other and without saying a word we both knew: this shit is not Jameson. Sadly, we have shared that look at bars all over Pittsburgh and have brought it up in a variety of posts. This just happened to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

We are sure most bar owners just assume that the public can’t tell the difference between whiskey A and whiskey B. To be fair that is probably true, especially at the bars where it tends to happen. There must be laws regarding this, but how would anyone enforce them?

So, what are helpless bloggers to do? Blog of course. We are going to bring this epidemic to the public’s knowledge! Raise awareness! Form a task force! Hold rallies! Lobby politicians! Make banners and shit!

We are not going to do any of that. Well, we guess this counts as the public knowledge and raising awareness parts.

Mostly, we would just like to say that it sucks. All we want is a shot of Jameson. If we wanted a shot of Old Crow or Banker’s Club, we would have asked for one. So if the offending bar owners are reading this, and you know who you are, knock that shit off.

  1. First of all I don't think you know what your taking about. I frequent that bar often and I have had lots of Jameson there so maybe you don't know what real Jameson is. How rude are you to make a negative comment about a bar that your know nothing about. The bartenders are amazing and they don't wear skimpy clothes they wear tshirts and black pants.

    1. Justin, we are not sure if you read the article, but the whole point of it WAS that Jameson's and "bankers" (not sure why you put quotes around bankers as it is an actual brand) are very different. So...yeeeah.

  3. First of all, this article is a bunch of bullshit and you know it. I have been to this bar. It is a great addition to the Squirrel Hill area. I drink Jameson and other whiskeys, as well, it's all the real thing. The owner is fantastic and the employees are so friendly and pleasant, compared to other bars I have been to. It is always a good time with good people. I would have to say you really sound like a local bar who is afraid of a little competition to the area or just someone who just has a personal problem with them. Get your facts straight before you try to bring a business down. You are not a very observant person. This bar has 12 taps, 9 televisions, non-smoking right now, prices are very reasonable of all ranges. Oh and by the way, I was just there, they had live music, dumbass. No under-age crowd, in fact a great crowd every time I am there. Jukebox has a very wide variety of music and you know it and the jukebox has a picture taking capability, which I personally like. Bar, bathrooms clean and very nice inside. I love it there and so do a lot of folks in the area. You definitely have a problem, your facts are so far off base. Like I said, sounds like a personal issue you have and you want to make shit up to try to hurt them for your own personal reasons or you are an upset bar who is mad someone new moved into your area. Get over it!!!!!!!!! Oh, and by the way, you are lucky a bar owner out there is still willingly to want to buy you or anyone a drink. Dumbass

    2. Like I said, your comments are bullshit, get your facts straight. Your whiskey was the real thing and you know it. LOL, it is obvious YOU are the one who is an owner or friend of a owner of a neighboring bar that is mad this bar moved in to the neighborhood and you have competition or you are a person who has a personal issue with this place.

  4. For such confident opinions, I don't understand the need to be 'Anonymous.' It gives you the option to add your name, but then you'd have to justify your penchant for cussing at a person you've never met and your idiotic belief that more than one exclamation point is necessary. I've never been to this bar and frankly see no need to ever go based off of the knowledge that people like you are their customers. Keep it up TGPPC

    1. Thanks for the support Lark! We are just sitting back and watching in amazement at this point. We found it amusing that a named person commented after you brought it up.

  5. Thanks for the review.
Owners, employees, and regulars can be defensive.
I hate when I order (and pay a premium for) a specific booze and get cheap booze. Putting it in a better brand bottle doesn't change the experience.
Gin is another one bar owners assume is safe to substitute.
Not all. Not always. But it sucks.
    Stay brave.

    1. Thanks man, we'll keep fighting the good fight!

If we hadn't started doing this blog, we never would have imagined it was such a problem. Even though this happened to be the bar review it came up in, there have been a good 10-12 other instances where the whiskey has not been right. We wish we'd been keeping better track from the get go.
