Cattivo is a huge place hidden away a couple blocks off the beaten path of Butler Street, on 44th Street in Lawrenceville. It's got two enormous bars, one at street level and one downstairs. Each floor has a large bar area, dance area, and stage. Despite its size, if you didn't know it was there you would probably never find it.
It's primarily known as a lesbian bar, but the crowd can really run the gamut depending on what night it is. Don't feel like you can't go there, whatever your gender or orientation. It's a very welcoming place.
Most of the big events happen downstairs. They range from burlesque shows, drag shows and dance nights (goth, top 40, 80s, you name it), to metal bands, go-go dancers and much more. It's a good event space, dark without being dank and nicely laid out for shows.
The upstairs bar is a little dingier and definitely way smokier. It is one of the least ventilated bars in the world. That's right, the world. It's noticeable with even just a couple of smokers. If you can breathe through the smoke, there are pool tables and pinball machines and it's really spacious, even if the lighting and ceiling make it look slightly like the inside of a trailer.
The staff is always friendly enough and there's almost never a wait for service. The drinks aren't particularly fancy or particularly cheap, but they won't break the bank. It's a quiet bar to grab a drink most nights of the week and a great bar if you're looking for something fun to do on the weekends.
