The whole bar has a distinctly heavy metal/punk rock vibe these days. On the weekends it's full of people, like any other bar on the South Side. During the week, well, I'm pretty certain that we were the only people without giant plugs in our ears.
The front bar and the large back room are divided by a narrow hallway and the sound systems are completely separate, as well. So, even if there's something going on in back, you aren't subjected to it at the bar. The events seem to vary in success from sparsely populated hipster Spelling Bees to super packed dance nights.
They've got a good beer selection, a good liquor selection, and a whole list of decidedly un-punk specialty martinis (though it might be funny to have the tattooed, pierced, patchwork vested bartender serve you a "Bikini Martini"), but the drinks are not especially cheap. There's a drink special most every night, though, and they seem to do the brisk business of both PBR and High Life pounders that you would expect.
Lava Lounge is one of the few bars on the South Side that we will go to willingly. It is not normally full of the regular South Side douchebags and, as long as you're not scared of tattoos and piercings, has a pretty nice crowd of people.
