Let's start with the things that are good about Ryan's. It has a really long bar with bar rails that make it very comfortable to sit at. It has a huge patio that is heated in the winter for the smokers. It's in a great location. It has a decent enough beer and liquor selection and it’s really close to J's house.
Unfortunately, the list of things that are bad about Ryan's is much longer. It is super brightly lit at the bar, less so at the dining tables. They make their employees wear uniforms. The employees are universally miserable (relation to uniforms: undetermined, but unlikely). The employees will, very openly, tell you how miserable they are, which makes everyone unhappy. The food is possibly the worst bar food we've ever experienced. J once ordered a soft pretzel and it came out over-microwaved and rock hard. It was clearly from a box of Super Pretzels. No one has ever screwed up a Super Pretzel this badly. Given all of this, it's no surprise that it was dead on a recent Friday night.
Ryan's has the potential to be a great bar. It has a lot of great space. (It has that patio!) But, it just isn't a great bar. It's not even a good bar.
Our recommendation: give it a complete Gordon-Ramsey-screaming-at-you style redo. Or sell the place to someone who will. We so very badly want this to be a good bar.
