Uncle Jimmy's

If those walls could talk, we would have to keep everyone out of earshot. Uncle Jimmy's hasn't changed one bit in the past 15 years. Seriously, not one bit. If you are looking for a bright and clean bar experience in Oakland, go across the street to the newly remodeled Bootleggers. If you want to shoot some pool in a smoky bar where no one cares who you are or what you do, this is your place.

Uncle Jimmy's seems really narrow and small at first. There is a long bar with a narrow path behind the barstools. It is dark and the padded bar rail is well-worn, by which we mean, the stuffing is in equal amounts on the floor and in the bar rail. When you finally get to the end of the bar and turn left, there is a huge open room.  This allows for shenanigans. The bartender cannot see through the giant wall separating the room from the bar. It also provides cover from the regulars at the bar. Not that anyone would ever take advantage of such a setup...

Beyond the unusual size and set up of the bar, it’s nothing too special. It’s more like the drunken uncle that you kind of enjoy at holiday parties than the “uncle” who tries to get you into his van. The bartender was attentive and friendly, the regulars were not scary and the prices were on par for the area. We hadn't been there in a decade and will probably not return anytime soon, but it was fun to pop-in and remember old times.
