Hough's

Hough’s is the most recent addition to the Greenfield “bar scene” and you can tell. This is not an old-timey yinzer hole in the wall. You will not be purchasing a Miller High Life for $2.75.

You will, however, get one of the best beer selections in the city. They have about 60 beers on draft and two pages of bottles from which to choose. There’s even a handy list of beer type definitions on the back of the menu, for when you don’t want to look like an illiterate bumpkin in front of your bartender.

It’s a really big space and brightly lit. It’s a bar that feels more like a restaurant in a lot of ways and they do have a pretty extensive bar food menu. The main bar, especially, is a horseshoe of gorgeous wood, but it’s lit by a bank of super bright halogens and seems almost too clean for a bar, if that’s a thing.

There is a smaller bar down a few stairs where things are slightly darker and feel more like a traditional bar. This is where most of the beer taps live. And, sometimes, you just want to pick a beer out by the fancy tap handle. They also have the option of sampling smaller, flight size, glasses of beer for $1-$2 each, which is fantastic.

Even on a weeknight it’s crowded, but the service has been consistently good despite that. It’s a much younger and richer crowd than any other place in Greenfield, as you would expect. Slightly sports-oriented, but not an outright sports bar atmosphere. They're really getting involved in the Pittsburgh food and beer scene, which is great. They had events every day for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week and included local food trucks even though that must have put a dent in their own food sales.

It’s hard to come up with any complaints about Hough’s, but it’s lacking in charm somehow. It could be the lighting, it could be the prices, it could be the crowd, but there is something missing here despite all the great things about it. Hopefully they will be able to age into something truly spectacular.
