Among the many signs on the door to Rumshakers is one of those "We're not racist!" racist signs stating, "No white T-shirts." The signs have changed over the years as fashions have changed, but the intent is always the same. Race relations in Pittsburgh are outside the purview of this blog, but it's important to mention here as it was a sadly comical encounter. When A very naively asked the (white) bartender about the sign, the (black) patron next to him spun around and launched into an N-word tirade the likes of which neither of us had ever heard. She explained in a very direct manner exactly who that sign was targeting and said the N-word more times than we thought humanly possible. She then went on to explain that it would be perfectly acceptable for A to wear a white t-shirt because, well, he is white. When we brought up the blatant racism of that kind of policy, she agreed that it was, but wasn’t bothered by it one bit. She was funny and boisterous and extremely adamant, but it was a really weird situation. The bartender kept his mouth shut the whole time.
Also, our Jameson was served in those tiny plastic shot cups. That's the worst. There's pretty much nothing to recommend this place. And it smelled.
