It took over what used to be the back half of the South Side Beehive and there is still an open door between the two. The decor is fancy log cabin with wood and antlers and the whole bit. It's nice, if cheesy.
This is definitely a place that survives on weekend business, like much of the South Side. We walked by on a couple of previous South Side jaunts and didn't go in. On a weekday it was too empty for us to get any kind of feel for the bar. On a weekend it was too packed to even sit down. Finally, on this last trip down Carson Street, we figured we'd better just get it done despite it being mostly empty.
The bartender was really nice and chatty, maybe bored. We discussed whiskey, the normal crowd that they get, and her hatred of the pinball geeks that occupy the space some days of the week. They've got a nice set up with lots of nooks and crannies for sitting and a huge back patio.
We can’t really think of a reason why no one is in the Rowdy Buck during the week, something must be missing. The drinks are kind of pricey and we were disappointed to see that they have a Bikini Night where the bartenders serve in bikinis. Maybe the reason no one is in the Rowdy Buck on weeknights is because they have an identity issue. Can one bar have the look of a Disney log cabin, hold pinball days, pimp out girls in bikinis and still have a clear image to its patrons? Doesn’t seem like it.
